Now you understand why it is called the Mongrel. But it works, and works like we other racers want to work. The clutch can then be mounted either in-board or out-board using the supplied key and snugged-up with included bolt outside washer. They have bronze bushings.
Keep the clutch clean. What I wanted was an affordable multi-shoe drum clutch that hit right, had a nice stamped with machined friction surfaces, and used MC/bully drive sprockets needle bearings. The drum is made of thicker metal to allow critical surfaces be machined so they are flat and square, minimizing run-out war page from heat. Several have done a great job but each lacked something that the other had.
So we had a hardened, two-piece hub made that would act as good inner race for the needle bearings. The clutch comes with a spacer washer that is chambered on the inside of one side. I have been most satisfied with the slip and lock-up features of max torque racing clutch, but hub was too soft for needle bearings sprockets wanted to use. This spacer goes on the crank first and chamber toward engine.
The clutch will stall or slip at 3100 rpm and lock up about 3200. 3/4 bore x #35 chain. Too tight will damage the hub requiring premature replacement. Lube the sprockets needle bearings with a drop or two of gear lube after cleaning.
It is OK to spray the entire clutch lightly with Ed-40. The clutch has plenty of play built in if you use the right amount internal shims mentioned previous paragraph. The problem with this clutch is that racers want to keep it a secret. We got a stamped steel drum that is little deeper than other drums.
Its a mutt, Heinz 57. Do not get anywhere near a drum clutch. It must be spaced enough to allow it move very slightly on the crank after tightening bolt.
